Community Commitment: Protecting Barrio Sabana Hoyos
During natural disaster crises, such as Hurricane Maria in 2017 and Hurricane Fiona in 2022, PREP provided communities with equipment for canal cleaning and flood prevention, particularly in Barrio Sabana Hoyos, Vega Alta, where over 300 homes faced severe flooding every year. At Puerto Rico EcoPark, our mission is not only to lead sustainable solid waste management and recycling efforts in Puerto Rico, but also to be a fundamental pillar for our communities when they need us most.
Another Year Supporting Barrio Sabana
Every year, during the rainy season and weather events, we join forces with the residents of Barrio Sabana in Vega Alta to prevent flooding and protect more than 100 homes in vulnerable areas.
Our commitment goes beyond environmental concerns. We provide heavy equipment, such as excavators and backhoes, to carry out preventive actions that help to:
- Clean stormwater channels and prevent blockages.
- Reinforce areas prone to overflow.
- Ensure the flow of water and prevent material damage.
Helping to Build a More Resilient Future
Puerto Rico EcoPark doesn’t just operate as a waste management company, but as a neighbor who cares and protects. We understand that current climate challenges require quick and effective responses, and we are proud to be an active part of the solution for our people.
Through these actions, we aim not only to reduce the impact of natural disasters, but also to contribute to strengthening more resilient communities that can better face extreme weather events.
Committed to Our Community
This support program for Barrio Sabana is just one of many examples of the positive impact we seek to generate across the island. We will continue to work hand in hand with community leaders and our teams to ensure the safety and well-being of families in Puerto Rico.
We want our efforts to continue making a difference in the lives of Puerto Ricans, contributing not only to a more sustainable future but also to a safer one.
